POOCH IS STAMPED AS A LEGEND The legend of Owney, Albany's beloved 19th-century postal mascot, continues to grow. A new children's book will further burnish the celebrity of the homeless mutt who sought shelter from a stormy night in 1888 atop a pile of old mail bags in the Albany post office. He was adopted by postal workers, who watched over the intrepid Irish terrier mix as he rode 143,000 miles aboard mail trains and steamships. The globe-trotting canine grew into an internationally recognized ambassador of the U.S. Railway Mail Service.
